Dipivefrin
Introduction
Dipivefrin is a prescription eye medication used to treat elevated intraocular pressure, especially in patients with open-angle glaucoma. It belongs to a class of drugs known as sympathomimetic agents and works by improving the outflow of aqueous humor (fluid in the eye), thereby reducing pressure within the eye. Dipivefrin is a prodrug of epinephrine, designed to have better penetration and fewer side effects. It is generally used in the form of ophthalmic drops under a doctor’s guidance.
Medicine Not Available for Dipivefrin
Uses of Dipivefrin
- Treatment of open-angle glaucoma
- Reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP)
- Used as an alternative in patients who cannot tolerate beta-blocker eye drops
How Dipivefrin works
Dipivefrin is converted into epinephrine in the eye. Epinephrine reduces intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow and reducing the production of aqueous humor. This dual action helps lower the pressure inside the eye, making it effective for managing glaucoma symptoms.
Benefits of Dipivefrin
- Effectively lowers intraocular pressure
- Provides an alternative to beta-blockers in glaucoma treatment
- Better ocular penetration than epinephrine
- Reduced frequency of systemic side effects
How to take Dipivefrin
Use Dipivefrin eye drops as prescribed by your doctor. Usually, one drop is applied to the affected eye(s) twice daily. Wash hands before use, avoid touching the dropper tip, and wait at least 5–10 minutes before applying any other eye medication. Do not stop the treatment without consulting your doctor.
